The Single-A Salem Red Sox are transforming into the Salem RidgeYaks! Imagine a domesticated bovine species from the Himalayas, now playing baseball, navigating via paddle-powered boats, and thriving in the Virginia mountains. This is the newest team identity in Minor League Baseball. The Salem, VA, team, previously known as the Red Sox since 2009, was owned by the Red Sox subsidiary Fenway Sports Group until 2023. That year, it was sold to Diamond Baseball Holdings, which also owns the Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester teams. The new RidgeYaks identity was unveiled on Saturday evening at Salem Memorial Ballpark. Allen Lawrence, the team's general manager, explains the name's appeal: 'We fell in love with all the meanings behind it.' The Blue Ridge Mountains, visible from the ballpark, inspired the name and the blue color of the yak. Lawrence adds, 'In southwestern Virginia, there's a lot of outdoor activities, and we wanted to incorporate that.' The name also references the 'yak' as a home run in baseball, a term for a kayak, popular in the area. Interestingly, there are no yaks in the Salem area. Lawrence humorously notes, 'There wasn't an avalanche in Salem either, but people loved when we were the Salem Avalanche.' The Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) designed the RidgeYaks' look, typically working in college athletics. The primary logo features a mountain landscape-inspired yak head, with furrowed brows forming a tree line. Blue etchings in the wordmark resemble Appalachian Trail blazes. The team's mascot, named Mac the Yak, was also introduced, inspired by the iconic McAfee Knob on the Appalachian Trail. Two secondary logos include a state outline with a star marking Salem's location and an interlocking blue YR against a white background. The circular alternate uniform sleeve patch logo, depicting a star above the mountains, completes the look. Both home and away uniforms display the parent club's primary logo, emphasizing the ongoing connection to Boston. Lawrence emphasizes, 'We're telling people that we're going to remain a Red Sox affiliate.' The Salem RidgeYaks will debut on April 2, 2026, against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
