Zubeen Garg’s sudden passing has left the nation in mourning. Amid the ongoing investigations into the events leading to his death, his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, claimed that the singer was not aware of the yacht party. She also blamed the organizers of the North East India Festival 2025 for negligence.
Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg’s death occurred on September 19 due to a scuba diving incident in Singapore. He died at the age of 52, having performed at the North East India Festival 2025. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, requested an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death after completing his 11th-day rituals. During her interaction with reporters, she stated that the singer had no idea about the yacht party, and she believed the organizers were negligent.
While speaking to the reporters, Garima Saikia Garg said that she and her family were not given clear answers about his passing. She emphasized that they sought answers, stating, “What actually happened to Zubeen Garg, we don’t know. How it happened is still a mystery. We need answers. He was the victim of negligence, that much is certain. But why was a person like him neglected? We want all the answers. I have faith in the investigation.”
Garima also questioned why the people who were with him on the yacht tried to stop Zubeen from entering the water despite knowing he was not in a condition to swim. She noted, “Why did they not lift him from the water when they knew he was not in a condition to swim? They could have done so. It was very easy to distract him,” she said.
Garima criticized Shyakanu Mahanta, the chief organiser of the North East India Festival 2025, for the arrangements. She stated, “I have nothing personal to say against him, but he certainly had a responsibility. Zubeen had gone there to attend a festival organized by him. He called Zubeen his friend, but I cannot understand how he could take an artiste like him without providing medical assistance, security or proper arrangements for his stay and food. He did nothing for Zubeen,” she alleged.
In response, Zubeen Garg’s wife raised concerns about the potential neglect of the festival organizers during his absence. She highlighted that the individuals present at the yacht were unable to provide necessary support despite knowing his condition. This prompted the Assam government to convene a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under DGP Munna Prasad Gupta to investigate the situation further.
