In his letter to Youkey, Deal said the city utility lines were an obstacle in efforts to induce the baking company to move into the industrial park.
"These lines are located directly across the building foundation now planned by Pepperidge, and before the company will commit to purchase the site, it insists that the lines be relocated," Deal wrote. The City Commission approved moving the lines in a 6-1 vote. City Commissioner Carl Dicks opposed the request saying the developer knew of the location of the lines when he purchased the park. With the approval of Jireh's request a group of Lakeland Chamber of Commerce representatives who had worked behind the scenes on the deal broke into applause. City Manager Youkey said later that moving the major utility lines could cost the city at least $210,000.
Polk County commissioners sweetened the offer Tuesday morning, passing a resolution amending a project to lengthen County Line Road north of Lakeland. The resolution reduced the funding allocated to the road extension by $300,000 so those funds can be used for the construction of an access road to the industrial park. Jim Brantley, the county's director of economic development, and John manager of the economic development department at the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, urged county commissioners to approve the funding for the access road Tuesday. Hamilton read the commissioners a letter from Richard Shea, president of Pepperidge Farm Inc. in Norwalk, Conn.
The letter says: "We are considering the location of a plant in Polk County in the Lakeland Square Business Park. Our tentative plans include the phased construction of a facility. The initial phase will include the bakery operations for bread and rolls, which will equal 75,000 square feet. The second phase is planned to begin within two years. Each phase represents a sizeable investment which will result in a state-of-the-art facility.
"We project an initial employment of 125 workers with an annual payroll of $3.5 million. We expect an additional 225 employees at the complete build-out of this project." Hamilton told the commissioners that he's been working on the project for three to four months and it's "down to the very final stages." County commissioners sweetened the deal by agreeing to build an access road to the industrial park where the bakery might locate. By MIKE WOLNY and CHERYL NORDBY SCHMIDT Tribune Staff Writers LAKELAND Winning concessions from city and county officials, the owner of a north Lakeland industrial park Tuesday moved closer to closing a deal that would bring a large baking firm to the city. The bakery company, Pepperidge Farm would build a multimillion-dollar bakery on a 23-acre site at the North Lakeland Square Business Park near Interstate 4 once negotiations were completed, an attorney for the owner of the park said in letters to city officials. The site belongs to.Jireh a development company owned by wealthy New Port Richey ophthalmologist Dr.
James Gills. Mary McGrath, a public relations spokeswoman for Pepperidge Farm, said Tuesday that the baking firm owned by Campbell Soup Co. has been eyeing the area between Tampa and Orlando for a baking plant that would serve its markets in Florida and Georgia. The plant would initially employ between 100 and 125 workers, Pepperidge Farm officials say. Negotiations involving Chamber of Commerce and local government officials; Bob Zane, the real estate director for Campbell Soup; and representatives of the industrial park's owner continued late into Tuesday afternoon at the chamber's Lakeland offices.
